Principle and method of condom burst test

2026-03-11 15:44

PRINCIPLE

Place the condom on a dedicated mold, inflate it with clean air at a constant rate, and monitor pressure and volume changes in real time. At the moment of rupture, record the burst pressure and burst volume to evaluate the material strength and overall integrity.

METHOD (based on GB/T 7544-2019/ISO 4074:2015/ISO23409)

1. Sample preparation: Select 13 samples from each batch, unfold them as required, and fit them onto a standard mold (length 140mm, smooth ball with a diameter of 20mm at the top).

2. Equipment installation: Secure the mold and condom, connect the inflation and pressure/volume measurement systems, and set the inflation rate to 24–30 L/min (≈0.4–0.5 dm³/s).

3. Formal testing: Initiate constant current inflation, and the system continuously collects data; automatically record the peak pressure and corresponding volume at rupture.

4. Result determination: Burst pressure ≥1.0 kPa; burst volume graded by width: <50mm is ≥16.0 dm³, 50–<56mm is ≥18.0 dm³, and ≥56mm is ≥22.0 dm³.

5. Reporting and Calibration: Record the burst value and test date for each sample; the equipment needs to be calibrated regularly according to standards.

KEY POINTS

- The test is a type/spot check item and needs to be conducted in a standard environment (temperature 23±2℃, relative humidity 50±10%).

- Re-testing after hot air aging can be conducted to verify the aging resistance performance.
